THE TALE OF A CITY

(Tiananmen Square 1989)

Revolution filled the air and seared
freedom into the hearts of the people.
Democracy touched their lips and lingered sweet upon the tongue.
They came in twos and threes and singularly
carrying signs and banners
and rose up their own Lady Liberty.

They were brave and could not fail.
Then the tanks came.
Tanks are stronger than men and unforgiving,
caring nothing for freedom.
And when the tanks came
it was the end of the beginning.
